This substantial eighties house was once a family home but the owners wanted to transition it into a free-flowing grownup space for entertaining, to cater for intimate dinner parties as well as large charity events.
While the owners liked the idea of open plan living, they also wanted to be able to close rooms off into more individual spaces, so we designed, commissioned and installed bespoke joinery to solve this challenge. From the kitchen to the dining room there are large sliding pocket doors - when open the space feels open-plan but the kitchen can also be shut off during prep and cooking times. From the dining room to the garden there was previously only a single door, so again this was an opportunity to install lovely new Georgian-style french doors with sidelights, making the room much brighter and more airy, and creating a better indoor/outdoor flow.
The original kitchen was under-sized in comparison to the remainder of the house so we made it bigger by knocking-through into the existing utility room and then made use of a disused passageway to create a new utility area. We kept our designs playful by separating the kitchen from the utility room with a secret door, hidden in a bank of cupboards; and we also stole some more space from the study, which enabled us to fit in a large central island.
In the living room, we designed and installed panelling to accentuate the room’s proportions and to hide a bespoke 7.1 AV surround-sound system. This system is linked to ceiling speakers throughout the downstairs so that they can either watch a film with full audio effects or, when entertaining, have seamless music throughout. Central to the living room is the new limestone fire surround and gas fire in a traditional style. As the room is very wide, we 'divided' it into two sections - one end of the living room has a cocktail cabinet and large window seat for casual pre-dinner drinks, while the other end is for glamorous relaxing.
All rooms feature a sophisticated palette of greys and navy blues with luxurious leathers, velvets and linens, to create a sumptuous entertaining space. Our clients are very happy with the transformation of their home, and so are we.
