The snug of our Andover project (find the before on slide 2 of our Befores and Afters page) was part of a previous extensive extension, which saw the addition of some great features like a double-sided glass fireplace and walnut floors, but left the rest of the room incredibly featureless. We added bespoke cornice with integrated LED lighting and wallpaper to add interest to the room. Similarly, new build properties boast clean lines, modern amenities, and a blank canvas for personalisation. However, the sterility of a brand new space can sometimes feel impersonal, like this snug did. So it got us thinking - what are some of the ways you can transform your new build into a home brimming with personality; here are some top tips to implement.

UNLEASHING THE WALLS' POTENTIAL

Walls are the largest canvas in your home. Move beyond the standard white paint and explore options that add texture, color, and visual interest.

Wallpaper Wonderland: Wallpaper offers a plethora of patterns, textures, and colors. Use a bold geometric print for an accent wall or a calming floral design for a serene bedroom. Consider removable wallpaper for a renter-friendly or commitment-shy solution.

Panel Power: Wall panelling adds instant sophistication and texture. Panelling beneath the dado rail creates a classic feel, while tongue and groove panelling offers a more relaxed aesthetic. Paint the panels a contrasting color for added drama.

Brick Beauties: Exposed brick walls add a touch of industrial chic. If your new build doesn't come with exposed brick, consider using brick slips instead.

FLOORING FOR FLAIR

Flooring choices significantly impact a room's character.

Mixing Materials: Combine different flooring materials to create visual zones. For example, use hardwood in the living area and patterned tile in the kitchen for a defined yet cohesive flow.

Warm Wood Tones: Rich wood floors add warmth and a sense of groundedness. Opt for reclaimed wood for a touch of rustic charm or lighter wood tones for a Scandinavian-inspired look.

Tile Time: Tiles come in a vast array of patterns, colours, and textures. Use patterned tiles for a pop of personality in bathrooms or kitchens.

ARCHITECTURAL ACCENTS

Architectural details elevate a space from ordinary to extraordinary.

Moulding Magic: Moulding adds a touch of elegance and defines the ceiling line. Consider dado rails for a classic touch or picture rails for a gallery-like feel.

Beam Me Up: Exposed beams create a sense of rustic charm and add architectural interest.

Built-ins for Beauty: Built-in bookshelves, window seats, or storage nooks add functionality and character.

HARDWARE HEROICS

Don't underestimate the transformative power of hardware.

Doorknob Drama: Swap ordinary doorknobs for unique, statement pieces that reflect your style.

Cabinet Catchiness: Replace generic cabinet pulls with unique hardware that complements your kitchen or bathroom cabinets. Consider vintage handles for a touch of history.

Light Fixture Flair: Upgrade basic light fixtures with statement pieces. Chandeliers add a touch of elegance, while industrial pendants lend a rustic charm.

BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN

Nature is a powerful way to add character and life to your home.

Living Walls: Create a vertical garden with statement plants for a touch of nature and a conversation starter.

Strategic Greenery: Place strategically chosen houseplants throughout your home to add pops of colour and life.

Natural Light Matters: Maximise natural light by keeping windows uncluttered and using sheer curtains.

PERSONAL TOUCHES

A home is a reflection of its inhabitants. Infuse your personality with these elements.

Vintage Vignettes: Display vintage finds, heirlooms, or travel souvenirs to tell your story and add a touch of history.

Artful Expressions: Showcase artwork that reflects your taste and adds a splash of colour and personality.

Curated Collections: Display curated collections like antique books, teacups, or travel mementos to create unique conversation pieces.

Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun. Your new build is your canvas. By incorporating these character-building ideas, you can transform it into a home that reflects your unique personality and tells your story.
