This young couple bought this Grade 2 listed terraced house with the aim of giving up hectic London life and moving to the countryside. A love of gardening and the outdoors, and an urgent need to modernise the layout, has formed the basis of our brief.
As the house only had a downstairs bathroom and they wanted to move it upstairs - we recommended moving it to the back of the second bedroom, making good use of the eaves and an airing cupboard. We’ve stolen space from the guest bedroom, but opened up the ceiling to create a more spacious-feeling room and a fun bunk bed mezzanine area for extra sleeping space. The new bathroom dormer window makes the most of views up the elevated garden, and the bathroom itself is large enough to accommodate everyone. Downstairs we’ve opened up the living room ceiling, creating a cosy authentic area and sourced lots of industrial lighting to add a modern touch. To bring more light and connectivity, we’ve added a feature window between the kitchen and living room. For the kitchen, we’ve designed a Shaker-style kitchen which will be finished in fresh colours to enhance the light and bright room. The previous downstairs bathroom has become a useful garden/laundry room easily accessed by the adjacent new back door (moved from the kitchen).
It will be a home where they can enjoy just as much time indoors, as outdoors.
